Endearing Mommy or Tyrannical Mommy?

Posted on August 12, 2010 at 9:05 AM

When talking to my newbies and struggling homeschoolers, I often ask them "are you the same mommy the week school starts that you were last week?"

Are you starting to feel overwhelmed by the many things that need to get started in August ?

It is only normal to feel that when August rolls around we desire to have "everything in place". That is a good thing. However, when our goal, if our household is younger, is to just grab a shower for the day, it is hard to feel "inspired" by planning or putting everything in it's place and not get tyrannical about it all.

Please though, I always share jokingly with my group don't turn into "MILITARY MOM". If you do, your kids might be wondering where do my real mom go. You know we call her NAZI MOMMMMMY. See, nobody likes her

Try to remember that progress takes time and I tell my newbies in my workshop "Stick to the basics" . That means "trim the fat" when it comes to teaching. By planning the essentials like reading, writing and arithmetic, you can gradually, as you feel less stressed, add in other subjects.

When you plan, keep the routine "general" and not too specific if your household is a younger one.

For example: Try this: "School 9:00 to 1:00" instead of 9:30 to 10:00 Math, 10:15 to 10:30 spelling, etc.

That type of specificity will only make you feel like you have not accomplished all that you tediously planned when you have interruptions. By keeping your "routine" you are training your whole household to a "rhythm" .

I have said it before and it bears repeating at this time in the school year and here it is:

1. Don't compare yourselves to other homeschoolers.

2. Aim high and shoot for excellence in your teaching, settle for "all that your children can do".

3. Avoid the urge to set unrealistic and idealistic goals that only Super Mom (remember her) can reach. I have never met her in my journey. She is only a figment in our imagination.

If you desire to stay an "endearing mommy " and are determined NOT to turn into NAZY MOMMMMY let me hear from you!:D
