Tests, tests, tests - do I really need to do them?

Posted on August 1, 2010 at 4:43 PM

That has to be one of the most frequently asked questions of the New Beginnings' Leaders .

We do share the reasons why testing can be beneficial with you in our workshops. However, one thing has to be absolutely clear in your mind before we answer it and that is why do you want to test. What is your purpose? What are you trying to accomplish with it?

In home school, we can have very different ways of evaluation and testing might be one way. Some families do not test and others live in states that require testing. Are you familiar with your state's laws on testing?

Don't follow the method of evaluation from a system that is failing. Testing can be a very useful tool but there are so many factors as to whether or not you need to test. A few are the ages of your children, their health, your health, the purpose of the test, what kind of test and if preparation for college looms right around the corner.

Since you hopped shipped from public school, do you really want to follow their evaluation method?

If you decide to test, be very clear as to your purpose and what your are trying to accomplish. Stop following the masses and see if it's a fit for your family.
